I think Mom & Pop shops will be an important niche for hoodFind and agreeably the most difficult to recruit. They'll have limited resources and time to consider new advertising venues. I've experienced this as a web designer as well. Even trying to get small businesses to get a website to help promote their business and offer the public basic company info for general use has proved difficult. For me trying to recruit the "fourth group" of small businesses - the owners who are currently happy with their client base or volume of business and aren't looking to expand or complicate things - has proved to be a challenge. I'd argue to those small businesses that it's not about quantity, but quality. Businesses want to have the most relevant clients, not just one-time users. They want repeat customers that "get" the product or offering of that small business. That's where I see hoodFind as an advantage. It's not like putting a full-page ad in the local newspaper and getting hundreds or thousands of responses. These small businesses needed targeted clientele - new customers that know what they want. That's the goal of web design and it's also the goal of hoodFind. Get the most relevant sales and deals the most relevant potential client base - locals. Keep working on those small businesses. Perhaps there's a template or approach that'll ring true to the little guys and they'll jump on board.

Thanks!

Mark,

This is a great addition. I think as things continue to heat up in local search, companies such as HoodFind will have to quickly differentiate and prove their value prop in order to "break through" to the Mom & Pops. Otherwise, the high-pressure salespeople representing bloated, ineffective ad solutions will continue to have their way.

Very interesting idea about the hyperlocal long tail. I would hypothesise that the closer they are to you, the more valuable the relevant goods and services become. Everyone likes to save time and get what they need in as little time as possible. Information is power...

Nice observations. I would add another group to your list, based on my own local research and observations. And that is that a fair chunk of mom &pops are just overwhelmed with the day-to-day operations of keeping the doors open, working long hours, not enough time to fully research new technology, and generally a skepticism maybe based on being sold a bill of goods previously from high pressure salespeople that didn't bring true results.
